I vote for Apple+oats more than I will for banana+oats anyday. Ofcourse, I can make Apple taste like banana too. Wanna know how?

Try this Apple and Oat foil packet that tastes like Banana recipe.

The goal here is to have oatmeal without any sweetener but it should be edible too; not taste like cardboard. When I first started eating oatmeal (it was instant oats, yikes! Come on, only that was available), I made them with water and ended it with a dash of milk and chopped almonds, always sweetened with honey.

And then I didn’t, after giving up on working out (because it is hard to keep going when you reach ideal weight and there is nothing to work anymore. Ofcourse, there is always maintaining the weight but that one needs discipline and a heaps of it!)

This recipe has no added sugar, nope, not even jaggery or honey or stevia.

Because, it’s time to eat like an adult who can combine two layers of food and find solace in married flavours.

Stewed Apples are said to have better digestive benefits than a raw one. I don’t know who said it; just ask Google or chatGPT or Gemini… I don’t know your cup of AI.

I used to run a mile away from cloves and now I seem to always hang around them like a nerd desperately wanting to get into clique (millennial word alert!) groups.

With the quantity that low, you are better off with a mortar and pestle!

Let’s get into the recipe now.

TOTAL TIME: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS

For stewed apples

Water – 50g
Cardamom seeds – 3 (refer pic)
Clove – 1 (refer pic)
Cinnamon stick – 1 small (refer pic)
Red Apple – 125g (measured whole with skin on)

For creamy oatmeal

Rolled Oats – 30g
Raw milk – 150g
Room temperature water – 150g

Optional garnish
Indian Ooty plum – 2 small plums or 69g ( measured whole)

RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Ground the mentioned spices in a mortar and pestle as powdered as you can. Wash apple, peel and core. Chop into small cubes. Add it to a small heavy bottomed wok or a saucepan, add water and ground spices to make stewed apple.

Step 2: Now turn on the heat, let the water come to a boil then lower the heat and simmer for about 8 minutes or until there is no added water left in the wok.

Step 3: Meanwhile, add rolled oats, milk and water to another heavy bottom cooking vessel, stir and turn on the heat. Wait for the oatmeal to come to a boil, then turn the heat down and let it simmer for about 12 to 14 minutes or how you see fit.

Step 4: You can either mix the oatmeal and stewed apples together in a bowl or layer them alternately to enjoy oatmeal without any added sugar.

Step 5: Optional garnish is chopped Indian Ooty Plums, they add third dimensional flavour to the oatmeal since they have tart and sweet taste to them. You can also top the oatmeal up with nuts like almonds or pistachios.

NOTE

I am trying to avoid eating white sugar or any sugar as much as I can. I eat this oatmeal without any added sweetener because sugar relief is provided by both the apples and plums here. You can always include your choice of sweetener to the oatmeal after cooking.

That is all!
